Jira is one of the most powerful project management tools in the world, but for first-time users, it's overwhelming. Too much jargon, no spatial orientation, and a tour that most people skip entirely. I set out to understand why new users were dropping off and redesigned the onboarding experience from the ground up, covering everything from the initial setup flow to the guided tour to an in-tool AI assistant for ongoing support.

First-time users feel confused and overwhelmed the moment they open Jira. They don't know where to start, what anything means, or how to take basic actions without outside help. Most drop off before they ever experience what the tool is actually capable of.

First-time users feel confused and overwhelmed the moment they open Jira. They don't know where to start, what anything means, or how to take basic actions without outside help. Most drop off before they ever experience what the tool is actually capable of.

The Solution

A redesigned onboarding flow that eases users in gradually, a spatial tour that orients them before overwhelming them with features, and an in-tool AI chat agent that answers questions as they come up — so users can build confidence on their own terms.

The Solution

The Result

Drop-off rate went from 60% to 0%. Tour completion went from 10% to 100%. Users who went through the redesign reported feeling oriented and confident
